It's the birthplace of denim innovators like G-Star RAW and Scotch & Soda and the European hub of internationally established brands like Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger, and now Amsterdam is launching the first ever Denim City Headquarters. It takes one look at the streets of Amsterdam to know: these people sure love their denim. With an average of five pairs of jeans per person, Amsterdam natives are leading the global charts when it comes to denim ownership. But it’s not just the inhabitants who see the value of a proper pair of jeans.
Amsterdam has been a design & development mecca for a variety of denim brands for years and can now claim one of the highest densities of denim companies in the world. Not only did Dutch brands like G-Star RAW, Scotch & Soda, KOI and Denham the Jeanmaker start their denim empire here, internationally acclaimed labels like Calvin Klein have also recognised Amsterdam’s pivotal position in the denim sector, by opting to open a European Headquarters in the Dutch capital. They will be joining Tommy Hilfiger Denim and Pepe Jeans, the denim veterans that have long been present in the region.
Looking at Amsterdam’s position as a denim nerve centre, it only made sense to also incorporate an actual denim campus, where both new talent and established brands could come together and work on a brighter blue future. With the opening of Amsterdam Denim Headquarters in the spring of 2015, this is becoming reality.
Aiming to connect and inspire all players in the denim industry, it was Amsterdam’s House of Denim Foundation, founded by James Veenhoff and Mariette Hoitink, that came up with the idea of creating a denim campus. “We were looking for a place where we could bring new talent and established brands together,” James Veenhoff explains. “There’s such an incredible talent pool in this city when it comes to denim, it would be a waste if we didn’t share that knowledge and build a platform for further innovation.”
The Denim Headquarters operate as a campus for denim craftsmanship, enterprise and sustainable innovation, housed in De Hallen, the former tram-works on Amsterdam’s Kinkerstraat. It consists of six independent but collaborating parts, including a workshop training centre, a denim archive, a clean laundry expertise lab and an embassy for the international denim community.
As far as Veenhoff’s concerned, Amsterdam Denim Headquarters is creating some interesting opportunities for the denim industry. “This campus is attracting innovators, experts, eager students and many others. It’s an incredibly inspiring place for anyone who’s affiliated with denim in any way.” Since many international players have already set up their European Headquarters in Amsterdam, there's another advantage for potential newcomers. Veenhoff: “Brands and Denim mills that are considering a move to Amsterdam will have an incredible talent pool at their disposal. From design and development to merchandise and social media: all the know-how is already here.”
Amsterdam’s rise to denim domination is being recognised around the world, Veenhoff observes. “After the our first edition of the bi-annual Amsterdam Kingpins show and annual Amsterdam Denim Days May 2014, Adriano Goldschmied – internationally considered the Godfather of Denim – called Amsterdam the new place to be when it comes to denim. And when he says it, you know it’s true!” [end of quote]

As winters in Amsterdam can be freezing and our showroom is too big to heat, we decided to put up a tent (parachute) creating a nice, warm and cosy atmosphere. Gezellig! From the outside it might however look a little suspicious ... let's cook! ;-)

In November 2017 we auctioned off five Italian made denim jackets on Catawiki. The jackets were customised by five different artists and donated to the auction to raise funds for the food bank in Amsterdam. Read more about this project in an article by Wouter Munich's on Long John's denim blog. We are happy to have been able to transfer € 1.175 to the good cause, thanks again to our artists and all generous bidders!
Now the story continues, as two of these jackets were donated back to us! We decided to put them to good use and display them in Berlin (Premium Tradeshow, Jan 16-18, 2018) and Amsterdam (Modefabriek, Jan 21-22, 2018) and run a unique promotion on Instagram!

Jeanslabel Amsterdenim en ondernemer Markus dirks openden onlangs een pop-up store aan de Gravenstraat 4 (Google Maps) in het hartje van Amsterdam. Deze "Amsterdenim pop-up store by Marcis Vintage"is een combinatie van een Amsterdenim-outle en een vintage store. Een "flagship store" kun je het niet noemen, al zijn er wel unieke items te zien, zoals de door kunstenaars bewerkte denimjackets van het "denim cs art"- project, waarvan de opbrengst volledig ten goede komt aan de voedselbank in Amsterdam-Noord. Naar verwachting zal op dit adres drie tot zes maanden lang een brede selectie Amsterdenim-producten te koop zijn. Deze pop-up store is een tweede stap nadat Amsterdenim BV eerder dit jaar naar Amsterdam verhuisde. Het hoofdkantoor, servicemagazijn en showroom zijn nu gevestigd op de Spijkerkade 11 in Amsterdam-Noord. Tel. 020-3346678.

This Saturday the Amsterdenim crew visited Welcome to the Village festival to watch the Broken Brass Ensemble perform on the mainstage. The 5th anniversary of both the WTTV festival and Broken Brass Ensemble gave this performance some extra energy.
The Amsterdenim crew travelled in style, in cooperation with Harley Davidson travelling was a great pleasure. An Iron 883 and the 750 Street Rod where taken from the Amsterdenim showroom along the Dutch IJsselmeer (the IJsselmeer, is a closed off inland bay in the central Netherlands bordering the provinces of Flevoland, North Holland and Friesland. It measures 1100 km² with an average depth of 5,5 m. The river IJssel flows into the IJsselmeer) to the Frisian capital of Leeuwarden.
Broken Brass Ensemble injects the traditional New Orleans brass with a fusion of hiphop, funk, soul, dance, jazz (and much more) and turn it into a blazing mixture of energy. They’re taking brass to a new level, creating a 2.0 version of the vibrant New Orleans brass sound in a light you’ve never seen before!
Combining the powers of funk, jazz, hip-hop and soul, Broken Brass Ensemble act as urban brass ambassadors, pioneering on their euphoric groove. The band have an innate ability to orchestrate a nostalgic New Orleans hot jazz sound, incorporating weird, wonderful and peculiar melodies, in fabulous superhero fashion, with their proven method in creating heroic melodies.
With origins based in the Netherlands, Broken Brass Ensemble have been firing up a storm all over Europe with an energizing and eclectic aesthetic, pairing punchy basses with hard-hitting brass. Selling out on CDs and vinyl from their previous album ‘Brasshopper’ in just over a year, and consistently filling 300 capacity venues without promotion and on merit alone, shows that underestimating this octet is out of the question.

With our festival we want to challenge you to investigate new initiatives by means of performance art, visual arts, social design and an innovation program. How? By being part of our mini-society. Welcome to The Village is a transient free state where there's room for trying out experiments, initiatives and products for a sustainable society. This is the place where you can enjoy excellent new music, but also partake in the various experiments being carried out by our knowledge partners. In short: a visit to our festival means you're music enthusiast, sponsor and guinea pig, all rolled into one festival-fancy package.
For us, Welcome to The Village goes on, even when the summer has ended. We are in operation all year long and work in partnership with dozens of communities, knowledge institutions, companies and over 600 volunteers in order to realize our objectives. We are absolutely positive about working with cultural entrepreneurs, scientists, newcomers, novices, seniors, Individual Pupil Funding Scheme students, thinkers and go-getters working on long-term solutions for our festival and the world around us. We are a platform for new sounds, visions, ideas and experiments. Pop is our bedrock, but Welcome to The Village also is a festival exploring the possibilities for a better world. This is a festival that aspires to be more than a 3-day event.
We had a great time travelling to Leeuwarden and really liked the festival, if you are looking for a creative festival this needs to be on your 'bucketlist' for next year. It is intimate, creative, is held on a great location and has a mix of really nice visitors.

Liggend aan de kade met prachtig uitzicht op het water en de schepen.
Een bedrijf met historie waar vroeger de zeilen werden gemaakt en getaand, met dezelfde techniek waarop wij onze jeans bewerken.
Ze hebben o.a. de eerste zeilen van het koninklijk schip, de Groene Draeck gemaakt (ook getaand natuurlijk).
Momenteel zijn ze in de volle voorbereiding voor de opening van het watersportseizoen, aanstaand weekend.
