Amsterdenim heeft op 6 juni The Best Social Award voor de beste video gewonnen. Directeur Ewout Rameijer: “De aandacht voor deze video levert de nodige exposure op.”

De humoristische commercial van Amsterdenim en het reclamebureau van De Speld, De Speld & Partners, werd door een vakjury als beste business video beoordeeld. In het filmpje ergeren toeristen zich aan Amsterdammers, iets wat vaak andersom het geval is. In de strijd om The Best Social Award business video dongen onder meer ook Bavaria, ING en de Efteling mee.

Andere budgetten

“We hadden gehoopt op deze prijs, maar niet verwacht dat we daadwerkelijk zouden winnen”, zegt Amsterdenim-directeur Ewout Rameijer als we hem bellen. “Efteling, Bavaria, ING, dat zijn niet de minste bedrijven, met heel andere budgetten dan wij. In het verleden hebben ook steevast grote ondernemingen deze prijs gewonnen, terwijl wij nog niet eens tien mensen in dienst hebben. Toch heeft een groot deel van de jury op ons gestemd.”  

Niche

De video heeft al aardig wat ondernemers naar het merk geleidt, vertelt Rameijer. “De aandacht voor deze video levert de nodige exposure op. Dat weet ik omdat ik altijd vraag hoe bedrijven ons gevonden hebben. De laatste tijd is dat vaak via deze video. We hadden al mooie filmpjes van het tanen van denim. Dat is mooi en authentiek, maar ook erg niche. We wilden nu een film maken waarin we laten zien waar wij – en de stad Amsterdam – voor staan. Wat dat is? Humor, handel, ambitie en een relaxt gevoel.” 

Beurzen

Amsterdenim vertoont de prijswinnende video tijdens de komende zomeredities van beurzen als Premium in Berlijn en Modefabriek in Amsterdam. Ondertussen werkt het merk alweer aan een nieuwe spraakmakende campagne. Rameijer: “Ik kan er nog niet al teveel over zeggen. Het thema is in ieder geval de tegenstelling die steeds meer ontstaat tussen linkse, extreem tolerante geitenwollensokken-types en de ouderwetse man, die gewoon van voetbal en bier houdt en zich soms wat onbegrepen voelt.”

Tourists in Amsterdam annoyed by huge amounts of locals in surprising Speld commercial for Amsterdenim.
 
They are walking in your way, they gather around all the hotspots and they live: Amsterdam locals. They are most troublesome for tourists who love to stroll around in the city. The new branded Speld commercial for the Amsterdam jeans brand Amsterdenim gives a surprising view on the interaction between tourists and locals.
In the 1.5 minute video tourists discuss the problems with locals. Their frustration grows, but so does the viewer’s sympathy for the locals. Of course, Amsterdenim plays a big role in that. In the words of tourist Julia: “Look at them being all perfect, wearing their own Amsterdam jeans like they own the place.”
 
Amsterdenim CEO Ewout Key Rameijer approached De Speld because of the branded video the satirical platform made for beer brand Oedipus: “That video proved that De Speld can reach a big amount of millennials in a very natural, yet unique way. The result of our collaboration confirms that humorous content can mean a lot for our target audience. For us it is important that the fashion-conscious man will see Amsterdenim as the exponent of the relaxed Amsterdam mentality. If you wear Amsterdenim, you wear a piece of Amsterdam. That message is clear in this video.”
 
Daan Unger, sales manager at De Speld & Partners, was enthusiastic from the start: “Making the video was a natural process. The problem with tourists is a typical theme for De Speld. It is a societal issue that people in Amsterdam and the other big Dutch cities are interested in. It was a nice challenge for us to present the annoyances in a keen-witted video for Amsterdenim, while introducing the Amsterdam local as the hero. I am glad we succeeded.”

Toeristen ergeren zich kapot aan enorme hoeveelheden Amsterdammers in verrassende Speld-repo voor Amsterdenim.
 
Ze lopen je voor de voeten, ze hopen zich op bij alle hotspots en ze wonen: Amsterdamse locals. Een doorn in het oog van de toeristen die rustig willen rondkuieren in de stad. De nieuwe branded Speld-repo voor het Amsterdamse jeansmerk Amsterdenim geeft een verrassend inkijkje in de manier waarop Amsterdammers en toeristen met elkaar omgaan.
In de anderhalve minuut durende video komen toeristen aan het woord over de localproblematiek, maar naarmate de frustraties van de toeristen toenemen, groeit de sympathie van de kijker voor de Amsterdamse locals die onverstoord hun gang blijven gaan. Daarin speelt Amsterdenim vanzelfsprekend een grote rol. Of, zoals toerist Julia het verwoordt: “Look at them being all perfect, wearing their own Amsterdam jeans like they own the place.”
 
Ewout Key Rameijer, algemeen directeur van Amsterdenim, benaderde De Speld naar aanleiding van de branded video die het satirische platform maakte voor Oedipus: “Daaruit bleek dat De Speld op natuurlijke, maar ook unieke wijze een grote hoeveelheid millennials kan bereiken. Het eindresultaat van onze samenwerking is wat mij betreft een bevestiging dat humorvolle content veel kan betekenen voor onze doelgroep. Wij vinden het belangrijk dat de modebewuste man Amsterdenim gaat zien als exponent van de relaxte Amsterdamse mentaliteit. Draag je Amsterdenim, dan draag je als het ware een stukje Amsterdam. Die boodschap vind ik in deze video goed naar voren komen.”
 
Daan Unger, salesmanager bij De Speld & Partners, was meteen enthousiast toen (Ewout Key Rameijer) belde: “De video kwam ook vrij natuurlijk tot stand. De toeristenproblematiek is een echt Speldthema, een maatschappelijk probleem dat mensen in Amsterdam en in grote steden bezighoudt. We zagen het als een mooie uitdaging om dit voor Amsterdenim te vertalen naar een gevatte video die de ergernissen treffend in beeld brengt, én daarbij de Amsterdamse local als hero neerzet. En dat is gelukt.”

We are proud to have our "MOKUM" jacket on display at Denim City in Amsterdam. Model: "FREDDY" designed by Ben Fokkema, made in Italy, released in 2015. This jacket was customised by artist Martijn Krabman as part of a project to raise funds for the Amsterdam Food Bank, presented during ADE 2017 as a tribute to the late Amsterdam major Eberhard Van Der Laan.

They will be joining Tommy Hilfiger Denim and Pepe Jeans, the denim veterans that have long been present in the region.

 

Innovation platform

Looking at Amsterdam’s position as a denim nerve centre, it only made sense to also incorporate an actual denim campus, where both new talent and established brands could come together and work on a brighter blue future. With the opening of Amsterdam Denim Headquarters in the spring of 2015, this is becoming reality. 

Aiming to connect and inspire all players in the denim industry, it was Amsterdam’s House of Denim Foundation, founded by James Veenhoff and Mariette Hoitink, that came up with the idea of creating a denim campus. “We were looking for a place where we could bring new talent and established brands together,” James Veenhoff explains. “There’s such an incredible talent pool in this city when it comes to denim, it would be a waste if we didn’t share that knowledge and build a platform for further innovation.”

The Denim Headquarters operate as a campus for denim craftsmanship, enterprise and sustainable innovation, housed in De Hallen, the former tram-works on Amsterdam’s Kinkerstraat. It consists of six independent but collaborating parts, including a workshop training centre, a denim archive, a clean laundry expertise lab and an embassy for the international denim community.

Denim domination

As far as Veenhoff’s concerned, Amsterdam Denim Headquarters is creating some interesting opportunities for the denim industry. “This campus is attracting innovators, experts, eager students and many others. It’s an incredibly inspiring place for anyone who’s affiliated with denim in any way.” Since many international players have already set up their European Headquarters in Amsterdam, there's another advantage for potential newcomers. Veenhoff: “Brands and Denim mills that are considering a move to Amsterdam will have an incredible talent pool at their disposal. From design and development to merchandise and social media: all the know-how is already here.”

Amsterdam’s rise to denim domination is being recognised around the world, Veenhoff observes. “After the our first edition of the bi-annual Amsterdam Kingpins show and annual Amsterdam Denim Days May 2014, Adriano Goldschmied – internationally considered the Godfather of Denim – called Amsterdam the new place to be when it comes to denim. As winters in Amsterdam can be freezing and our showroom is too big to heat, we decided to put up a tent (parachute) creating a nice, warm and cosy atmosphere. Gezellig! From the outside it might however look a little suspicious ... let's cook! ;-)
